When in Rome: Italian composer Giancarlo Menotti has been appointed artistic director of the Rome Opera. Menotti already had planned to direct the house’s opening production this season, Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor,” in December. In the spring, he will direct a revival of his work “The Counsel.”
