Queen Gets Applause, Jeers in Dresden
DRESDEN, Germany — Crowds greeted Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday with a mixture of applause and jeers as she sought reconciliation with this German city destroyed by British and U.S. bombing raids in World War II.
The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, took part in a prayer service in a reconstructed church that recalled the massive civilian casualties the air war inflicted on German cities.
Most of Dresden was leveled by the raids, and at least 35,000 people were killed.
German officials had emphasized the symbolic importance of the queen’s visit to Dresden during a five-day state visit to Germany.
But boos directed at the queen upon her arrival showed that even though the war ended 47 years ago, real reconciliation has yet to come. An egg was thrown from a crowd of protesters, but it did not hit anyone.
