IBM Unveils Low-Cost PCs Aimed at Clones: IBM has launched its most serious effort yet to compete with the “clone” personal computers that have been eating its market share for years. It unveiled a new low-price PC line called ValuePoint that it says will compete directly with Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp., AST Research Inc. and other clone makers. The four new ValuePoint models are priced starting at $1,299, including a color monitor.
