A FORUM FOR COMMUNITY ISSUES : Second Opinion / COMMENTARY FROM OTHER MEDIA : DIEN DAN THANH NIEN (Vietnamese) : Bush’s Loss Would Be No Surprise

Never was the United States positioned in such an ideal situation as in January, 1991, when it first launched its attack in Iraq. All conditions were favorable. The communist world just collapsed. The Russians voted for the United Nations troops’ attack in Iraq at the United Nations Security Council. Meanwhile, Japan agreed to spend money (on the military expense). Instead of prolonging the war (in Iraq) for a few more days to finish up Hussein once and for all, President Bush ordered a halt to the operation. Bush is in trouble in this election, whereas there is no sign that Saddam Hussein would be out.
When the Eastern Bloc collapsed, the U.S. had all the power and means to provide the opportunity for the forces struggling for freedom and democracy (for Vietnam), inside and outside (Vietnam) to push the Vietnamese communists out, restoring freedom and democracy to the Vietnamese. Bush was not clever enough to do that. If Bush does not win the election in November, it will not be any surprise.
