Ruzzi, Hartford Carry Troy to Victory
FULLERTON — Rob Ruzzi rushed for 100 yards in 16 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Troy past Sonora, 28-14, Friday night in a Freeway League game at Fullerton High.
Teammate James Hartford added 126 yards in 21 carries as the Warriors dominated the game early. Troy scored three consecutive touchdowns to take a commanding 21-0 halftime lead.
The Warriors (3-3, 1-0 in league) took their opening possession of the first quarter and marched 65 yards in nine plays as Ruzzi scooted in from five yards out to give Troy a 7-0 lead with 3 minutes 22 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Warriors added another touchdown on a five-play, 62-yard drive when Ruzzi ran in from nine yards out to give Troy a 14-0 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The final score of the half came on a 44-yard pass play from Brian Logan to Mike Morreno, capping a 54-yard, three-play drive and giving the Warriors a 21-0 lead at the half.
Troy increased its halftime lead on their second possession of the third quarter. Ruzzi scored his third touchdown on a one-yard run in the third quarter.
Sonora (1-5, 0-1) finally broke through when Robert Knowles connected with Adam Chez on a 15-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Sonora scored again when Knowles hit Chez on a 23-yard touchdown pass with only two seconds remaining.
