GARDEN GROVE — Garden Grove’s Jim Sebreros ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns as the Argonauts rolled to a 35-11 victory over La Quinta Friday night in a Garden Grove League game at Bolsa Grande High.
Garden Grove (4-2, 2-1 in league) set the tone for the night on the first play from scrimmage when Roy Mendoza turned a reverse into a 56-yard touchdown run. La Quinta then drove to the Argonauts’ 18 before settling for Jack Irving’s 32-yard field goal.
Midway through the second quarter, Garden Grove quarterback Brian Schneider faked a handoff to Mendoza and sprinted 56 yards down the sideline to give the Argonauts a 14-3 halftime lead.
La Quinta (1-5, 1-2) got back into the game in the third quarter. After Aztec linebacker Pat Wilson blocked a punt and fell on it in the end zone, Wilson caught a two-point conversion pass from quarterback Jason Gondringer to make it 14-11.
After being held to 24 yards in seven carries in the first half, Sebreros broke a 49-yard run to give the Argonauts a 21-11 lead after three quarters. Following a fumble recovery, Sebreros scored on a three-yard run.
Garden Grove’s Paul Pham completed the scoring when he returned an interception 84 yards.
Gondringer threw for 177 yards on 13-of-29 passing, but he threw five interceptions. He also was sacked five times for 26 yards.
