Newbury Oaks to Attend Series as Victory Reward

The players and coaches of the Newbury Oaks American Legion baseball team will attend two games of the World Series, beginning Saturday night in Atlanta.

Players and coaches from Newbury Oaks, which won the Legion World Series championship in August, are scheduled to be introduced before Game 1 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The team also will attend Game 2 on Sunday.

The American Legion annually treats its championship team to two Series games. Woodland Hills West, which won the Legion Series title in 1989, attended two games in Oakland that year.

The Boys and Girls Club of Moorpark has received a $39,040 grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles. The Moorpark group is one of six organizations in the region to receive money from the organization that distributes surplus funds from the 1984 Olympic Games.

The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley received $33,296 and the Burbank Family YMCA $18,409. Chatsworth Youth Sports, St. Bridget Jr. Baseball League in Van Nuys and the Sunland-Tujunga Winter Softball League each received $5,000.

Chuck Cagley of Westlake Village won the state jet ski championship in the 650cc/750cc class earlier this month at San Luis Rey Reservoir southeast of San Jose.

Cagley was the top qualifier during the heats and topped a field of 30 riders from throughout the state in the final.

Cagley, 18, a freshman at Moorpark College, began jet skiing in May and has qualified for the world championships Oct. 20-25 at Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Justin Huish of Simi Valley has been named to the U.S. Junior Elite Archery team after winning the National Archery Assn. Outdoor national championship.

A five-kilometer run/walk and wheelchair race will be held Oct. 24 to benefit Oxnard College’s Drug Awareness Program.
