Police Believe Man in Street Was Slain
SANTA ANA — A 53-year-old Santa Ana man died early Wednesday after he was discovered unconscious in a street with massive head injuries, police said.
Police think that Jefferson Mayfield was murdered but have few leads in the case, Sgt. Art Echternacht said.
An unidentified person called paramedics at 11:42 p.m. Tuesday to report a man lying on the ground at 100 S. Daisy Ave. with what appeared to be head injuries suffered in a traffic accident, the police sergeant said.
When paramedics arrived, they found Mayfield unconscious and transported him to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Echternacht said. Doctors told police that Mayfield’s head injuries were not caused in a traffic accident, prompting homicide investigators to begin working on the case after Mayfield died at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, Echternacht said.
An autopsy completed Wednesday revealed Mayfield died of blows to the head, Echternacht said.
