Not Everyone Thrilled Magic Is Back

Hurray! Hurray! Magic Johnson is returning to the Lakers. But wait, let’s take a look at this situation and delve into the double standard of our society.

I am a practicing dentist who does not have the HIV antibody, but yet, when I work I must wear a disposable gown, mask, gloves and safety glasses. If I was to contact the AIDS virus, I would be forced to retire from my profession.

But Magic Johnson, who has tested positive for HIV, can return to his career as a professional athlete. Now isn’t it true that blood, sweat and saliva are going to be exchanged on the basketball court?

I don’t sweat or spit on my patients, yet I am required to wear protective apparel. Will Magic be wearing a mask and gloves when he puts on his Laker uniform?

In the best interest of his fellow athletes and for the cause of AIDS, Mr. Johnson should retire from the profession.
