Poly High is 3-0 for the first...

Poly High is 3-0 for the first time since 1982 when it won its first nine games before losing in the opening round of the City Section playoffs.

The Parrots, City 3-A Division champions in 1990, have scored in double figures in 27 consecutive games since a 17-8 loss to Belmont in their 1990 opener.

Poly’s multi-threat backfield makes it tough for opponents to slow the Parrots. A different player has rushed for 100 yards or more in each of Poly’s first three games: Anthony Muse, Ron Botley and Johnnie Brown.

Rushing: North Hollywood’s Carl Evans, who gained 149 yards in 18 carries last week, surpassed last season’s team rushing leader--in one game. During the Huskies’ winless season last year, Morris Arnwine was the team’s leading rusher with 122 yards in 36 carries.

Oxnard and Rio Mesa will meet Friday in a Channel League opener in which there likely will be few forward passes. After three games, the teams have rushed for a combined 1,643 yards and passed for only 105. Quarterbacks Larry Bumpus of Oxnard and Don DiDomizio of Rio Mesa have a combined 13 completions.

Junior running back George Keiaho of Buena has rushed for 684 yards and nine touchdowns in 82 carries--an average of 8.3 yards a carry--yet has not caught a pass. . . . Littlerock’s Bryan Wilkins, averaging 6.3 yards a carry, leads Golden League rushers with 385 yards and six touchdowns in three games.

Montclair Prep senior Eliel Swinton passed the 4,000-yard rushing mark with 185 against Bell-Jeff last week. Swinton has rushed for 501 yards this year, 4,001 in his career.

If the goal of Crescenta Valley Coach Jim Beckenhauer is to establish a balance between backs Erik LaCom and Paul Lopez, he is doing a great job. In the first game, each player carried 12 times for 85 yards. In the next game, each carried 10 times, LaCom gaining 74 and Lopez 70. In the third game, each carried 11 times for 55 yards. LaCom has four touchdowns and Lopez has three.

Passing: Newbury Park quarterback Keith Smith continues to break school records. Last week against Buena, Smith, a 6-foot, 170-pound junior, set school marks with his 26th touchdown pass, breaking the record of 25 set by Jerry Torgerson (1970-71), and his 394th pass attempt, breaking the mark of 391 set by Wayne Cook (1987-88).

Smith also tied a school record with three two-point conversion passes against Buena. Greg Tipton had three conversion passes in a game in 1981. Smith has become the Panthers’ all-time passing leader with 3,268 yards. Jayson Merrill (1985-86) held the old record with 2,830 yards.

Saugus quarterback Bobby Cowan passed for more yards (278) and touchdowns (three) in the first half of the Centurions’ win over San Marino than he did in his first two games combined (263 and two, respectively). Cowan did not play in the second half.

Hoover quarterback Nate Dishington has thrown an area-high 136 passes in three games. The next closest is Simi Valley’s Eric Bennett with 108. . . . Hueneme quarterback David Andrade threw four interceptions against Camarillo. A week earlier, Andrade threw five interceptions against Channel Islands. Andrade has nine interceptions in 103 attempts.

Notre Dame’s Joey Orlando had 11 catches for 122 yards last week against Glendale. That’s more catches than the following teams have this season: Reseda, Cleveland and Camarillo (nine each); Canoga Park, Crescenta Valley and Rio Mesa (eight each); Kilpatrick and Taft (seven each); Oxnard (five) and Poly (four).

Defense: Agoura has surrendered only 86 yards passing, including 16 last week against Fillmore in recording its second shutout. (The Chargers forfeited their 34-0 victory over Santa Clara because they used an ineligible player). Agoura has yielded 477 yards, fewest among Marmonte League teams.

San Fernando has seven interceptions in three games but no player has picked off more than one. Brandon Cade, Flip Aguilar, Noe Avila, Gabe Fajardo, Kilian Young, Derrick Rowe and Paul Maldonado each has one interception. The remaining seven teams in the Northwest Valley Conference have combined for only 15 interceptions.
