Simi Valley 34, San Diego Serra 28--Quarterback Eric Bennett completed 21 of 37 for 309 yards and four touchdowns as the Pioneers (2-1) held off host Serra in San Diego.

Wide receiver Aaron Whitley was Bennett’s favorite target with nine catches for 148 yards and a touchdown. Tom Herman caught five passes, three for touchdowns.

On the ground, Jevon Markarian balanced the Pioneer attack with 125 yards in 23 carries as Simi Valley outgained Serra (1-2), 457 yards to 367.

Simi Valley led, 21-6, entering the final quarter, only to have Serra cut the margin to 24-22 midway through the period. But Herman’s third score, a 23-yard reception from Bennett, and a 35-yard field goal by Jeff Jagard clinched the win.
