Fritz Leiber Jr.; Widely Honored Science-Fiction Writer

Fritz Leiber Jr., 81, prolific, award-winning science fiction writer. Educated in psychology and physiology at the University of Chicago, he earned six Hugos, three Nebulas and two World Fantasy awards during his long career. Leiber’s last book, “Gummitch and Friends,” will be published in October. His best-known work was a sword-and-sorcerer fantasy series about an adventurer known as the Grey Mouser, completed in 1990. His novels include “Conjure Wife,” a classic witchcraft story that was the basis for two films, “The Green Millennium,” “The Big Time” and “The Wanderer.” Leiber taught speech and drama briefly at Los Angeles’ Occidental College. On Saturday in San Francisco of a stroke.
