Clippers’ 3-Way Deal Is Dead

From Staff and Wire Reports

With the stalemate nearing its second week, a top Orlando Magic official conceded Wednesday that the three-team trade with the Clippers and New York Knicks is not going to happen.

In the deal, agreed to Aug. 28, the Knicks would have acquired Charles Smith, Doc Rivers and Bo Kimble from Los Angeles, the Clippers would have received Stanley Roberts from Orlando and Mark Jackson from New York and the Magic would have received a first-round pick from the Clippers and a No. 1 and a No. 2 from the Knicks.

But Roberts exercised a little-known clause in his contract and blocked the trade. All restricted free agents who have an offer sheet matched have that same right for a year.

“The deal as it has been reported is not going to happen,” Orlando General Manager Pat Williams told the New York Post. “I’m certain of that. Stanley’s position is that he likes Orlando, wants to stay here and has no interest in a trade.”
