At Turin, Italy, Kevin Young, who had broken Edwin Moses’ 400-meter hurdles record at Barcelona, ended his spectacular season by winning the men’s overall title in the grand prix final in 48.16 seconds. It was his 11th grand prix victory, a record.
The women’s overall title went to Germany’s Olympic champion long jumper, Heike Drechsler. She soared 23-4 1/2 and clinched the overall prize of $25,000. Jackie Joyner-Kersee, second to Drechsler at Barcelona, was second again, leaping 22-10 3/4.
American Olympic bronze medalist Dennis Mitchell won the 100 meters in 10.09. Carl Lewis was second.
American Olympic 200-meter champions Mike Marsh and Gwen Torrence lost to Namibia’s Frankie Fredericks and Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey, respectively.
In a duplication of his Olympic failure, Sergei Bubka missed three times at his opening height of 19-2 1/2, five days after raising his world record to 20-1.
