I greatly appreciate the article by Amy Wallace, pointing out the factual errors in Pat Buchanan’s reference to the Vermont Knoll Retirement Center and the May riots (Aug. 19). The fact that the residents courageously saved their own housing makes me all the more proud of the fact that the development of the housing was only possible with financing assistance provided through the city of Los Angeles. And it is such programs that George Bush, Pat Buchanan, and their fellow Republicans have actively sought to eliminate.
Buchanan, in his haste at the Republican Convention to gloat over a national tragedy--the need to send the National Guard into our inner city--may not have known his facts but he surely knew his audience.
