Smoke Halts Amex Trade

NEW YORK — Smoke from a nearby fire closed the American Stock Exchange early Friday, halting trading in New York and sending about 2,500 employees home early for the Labor Day weekend.
The three-alarm fire began at 7 a.m. EDT and was brought under control by 10:57 a.m. The exchange expects normal trading to resume Tuesday morning after the holiday on Monday.
The fire, about a block from the exchange, caused smoke to billow onto the trading floor and cut Friday’s session to half an hour.
Stocks listed on the Amex continued trading on regional exchanges and electronic networks. Friday’s final prices will reflect trading conducted outside New York, after the exchange closed here, Amex officials said.
