Spain Train

Your recent article (“The Train in Spain Stays Mainly in the Plain,” Aug. 16) reminded me of one particularly amusing train trip from Venice, Italy, to Barcelona, Spain, with my wife and friends. Twenty-four hours after our departure we arrived in Barcelona exclaiming, “The pain in Spain lies mainly on the train.” Upon returning home we read in the Times travel section, “If your travel agent tells you it’s impossible to go from Venice to Barcelona by train, believe him.” Unfortunately, we got the message too late.
