Louis C. Sudler, 89, who led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s rise to prominence. Sudler was chairman of the Orchestral Board, the symphony’s parent, from 1966 to 1972 and chairman emeritus from 1972 to 1977. He hired John S. Edwards as general manager and Edwards lured Sir Georg Solti to direct the symphony in 1969. Sudler arranged and paid for the symphony to play at Carnegie Hall in 1970 and Europe in 1971, boosting its stature internationally. Sudler also founded the John Philip Sousa Foundation to reward members of marching bands. In Chicago on Tuesday.
