WORLD IN BRIEF : SWEDEN : CIA Defector to Soviets Seized

Swedish secret police have detained Edward Lee Howard, a former CIA agent who defected to the Soviet Union. The Swedes apparently are preparing to expel Howard from the country. Howard, 40, fled the United States in 1985, two years after being fired by the CIA. He eventually defected to the Soviet Union but came to Sweden last December. The FBI has a warrant for Howard’s arrest on charges of espionage and illegal flight to avoid prosecution.
