The man shot and killed by Los Angeles police officers after allegedly lunging at them with a large kitchen knife was identified Thursday by the coroner’s office as Leroy Lewis, 67, of Los Angeles.
The incident occurred before 8 a.m. Wednesday at a Hancock Park dry cleaners after the man had stabbed both proprietors, neither of whom was seriously injured. One proprietor said the man had carried in a suitcase. She said he pulled out “socks, toys, a towel--everything. And then he took out a knife.”
After police arrived, she said they repeatedly told the man not to move and to drop the knife, but he kept advancing and shattered the front window with the knife before being shot.
