Shapiro’s Hit Decides Area Code Game, 3-1
A two-out infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning by Jeff Shapiro of Montclair Prep drove in two runs Thursday to hand the Area 818 Angels a 3-1 victory over the Area 800 Astros in a first-round game of the annual Area Code Games at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
With the bases loaded, Shapiro sent a grounder to the hole on the right side to drive in Glen Carson of Notre Dame and Mark Lopez of Chatsworth. Justin Siegel, a left-hander from Taft High, pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.
Crespi’s Jeff Suppan allowed one earned run in four innings, struck out two and walked three.
