South Pasadena : Water Rate Hike Proposed

A consulting firm is recommending that the city hike its water rates by more than 50% to counter declining revenues and surging costs from water suppliers.

According to a water rate analysis presented at last week’s City Council meeting, a 54% rate increase is needed to balance the water fund budget.

In addition, the study by ASL Consulting Engineers cited a need for the city to replace its aging water equipment and to simplify its billing procedures. Building an emergency reserve account for the water fund also should be considered, the report said.

City Manager Kenneth C. Farfsing told the council that the city’s water rates are among the lowest in the San Gabriel Valley and have not been properly adjusted for several years.

The City Council scheduled an Aug. 19 public hearing on new water rates.
