Advanced Logic Research Cuts Prices to Meet the Competition of AST

IRVINE — The computer rivalry heated up in this city on Tuesday. Advanced Logic Research Inc. said it cut prices on a number of its computer models to stay competitive with rival computer maker AST Research Inc.

ALR said it cut prices up to 18% on a line of desktop computers and up to 26% on a line of computers aimed at small businesses and corporations. Meanwhile, AST said it will introduce two new products on Monday.

AST said it would introduce an upgraded version of a desktop computer for the Japanese market. The machine is based on IBM Japan’s DOS/V Japanese language computer operating system, and it has a faster speed than an earlier model introduced in October.

AST also formally introduced on Tuesday a long-awaited multiprocessor computer, which uses more than one microprocessor, or main computing brain, to process data quickly.

The computer, which was unveiled at a trade show in Santa Cruz, was in the works for several years and its introduction had been delayed several times.
