THE ARTS
Award Masters: Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director-designate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and South African playwright and filmmaker Athol Fugard have been chosen as Twentieth Century Masters of the Arts for the 1992 Dorothy B. Chandler Performing Arts Awards. As such, they will join Ernest Fleischmann, the Philharmonic’s executive vice president, and Gordon Davidson, artistic director of the Mark Taper Forum, in selecting two young artists from the symphonic music and theater fields for this year’s Chandler awards. The winners will receive a cash prize of $25,000 and a commemorative sculpture by artist Robert Graham at the awards gala on Nov. 1.
