Mammal, Bird Deaths Tied to Chemical Spill

SUPERIOR, Wis. — Wild and domestic mammals and birds representing 23 species died near a tanker derailment that dumped toxic chemicals into a river, a state agency said Monday.
However, no severe or long-term effects on the Nemadji River are expected, the report by the Department of Natural Resources said.
A chemical mixture containing mostly benzene oozed from a tanker that fell from a trestle June 30 when 14 cars of a train derailed.
