NEW RELEASES : JAZZ : In Brief
*** Ralph Peterson Fo’tet, “Ornettology,†Blue Note. Since the leader is a rambunctious drummer prone to brash flurries, his music’s light, subtle textures kind of seem out of character. Not! The group interplay achieves a finely honed balance as Don Byron’s strong, serpentine clarinet lines soar, Melissa Slocum’s bass anchors, and Bryan Carrott’s vibraphone provides both airy atmospherics and a percussive spur for Peterson. The sound of the five Fo’tet originals is fresh and intriguing.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
