A First: Calling it “a historic, unprecedented event,” the multicultural Dance Theatre of Harlem announced Tuesday that it will perform for the first time in South Africa in September. The troupe will dance at the recently refurbished Civic Theater in Johannesburg Sept. 7-27, and the three-week stay will include a community outreach program with lecture demonstrations, master classes and workshops for local artists and dancers. DTH founder and artistic director Arthur Mitchell said the trip will be an opportunity for the predominantly black company to bring a message of “what can be achieved when all children are given an equal opportunity to excel. . . . I never thought in my lifetime. . . . it would be happening.”
