A 16-year-old Los Angeles girl was killed Sunday night as she rode in a car on the Harbor Freeway near Carson, apparently the victim of what sheriff’s deputies said was a drive-by shooting by a gang member.
Maria Guadalupe Avila was among eight people in a car traveling north about 10:30 p.m. when a man in a van flashed gang signs at the car and fired several rounds, said Deputy Angie McLaughlin. Neither Avila nor any of those with her were believed to belong to a gang, detectives said.
Avila’s companions took her to County-Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, McLaughlin said. At least two other passengers in the car were cut by flying glass.
The assailant exited at the Carson Street off-ramp. Deputies ask that anyone with information call detectives at (213) 974-4341.
