NO STONE UNTURNED
“The Quiet Palestinian†(by Daniel Williams, June 7), profiling Palestinian leader Faisal Husseini, misrepresented the Temple Mount incident of Oct. 8, 1990. Williams states that “incited by a sudden release of police tear gas, the anxious Palestinians threw rocks on the scattering Jewish worshipers below the mosque at the Western Wall.â€
Three major reports--by the Village Voice, by “60 Minutes†and by an Israeli government investigating commission--contradict Williams’ account. For the Village Voice piece, Cal State Northridge journalism professor Michael Emery located videotapes taken by Israelis that proved Palestinians did not throw rocks at Jewish worshipers.
The Israeli government’s investigating commission, headed by Judge Ezra Kama, released a report stating that no Palestinian was in any way a cause of the riot and that rocks had been thrown at police only after they detonated a tear-gas grenade near a group of Palestinian women. Some of the rocks aimed at the police went over the Western Wall into the plaza below, but the area had already been cleared.
