LAURA REMSON MITCHELL, government issues coordinator for the Multiple Sclerosis California Action Network, recently urged legislative leaders to reconsider proposed cuts in the state budget that would affect programs for the sick and disabled and aid to nursing homes. She told The Times:

The adoption of all the cuts that had been proposed and elimination of the county safety net for poor sick and disabled residents would mean that many people, quite frankly, won’t survive.

In-Home Supportive Services is the main program we are focusing on because that is the one that allows people with disabilities to live independently at home. They are also talking about eliminating some very key Medi-Cal benefits.

We do recognize that certain cuts may be inevitable. But if you cut a program that helps to keep people with disabilities in their homes, and, as a result, those people wind up going into a nursing home, that is going to be more expensive for the state. If, in addition, state licensing of nursing homes is eliminated and payment rates are reduced, as has been proposed, there clearly is a health and safety risk.
