Philadelphia Makes Rookie Lindros Rich
The Philadelphia Flyers said they have signed Eric Lindros, the 19-year-old forward whose rights alone cost them five players, a top draft pick and $15 million. The Flyers have called a news conference for today and will reveal details of the contract then, according to spokesman Gregg Shore.
The deal has been said to be worth $2 million per season. Flyer General Manager Russ Farwell said on July 1 that Lindros was seeking a short-term contract that could be renegotiated, but Lindros said upon arriving in Philadelphia, “I’ll be here six years.â€
Philadelphia won the rights to Lindros when an arbitrator upheld its deal with the Quebec Nordiques.
The Flyers gave Quebec five players--goaltender Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci and Peter Forsberg--their top draft pick in 1993, future considerations and $15 million for the rights to Lindros.
