Fitzwell Will Redo ‘Capital’
Eugene Loring’s 1953 ballet, “The Capital of the World,†will be reconstructed for the Oakland Ballet by Orange Coast College dance instructor Roy Fitzell. Fitzell danced the lead role of Paco in the original production, which was created for American Ballet Theatre.
Plans are for the Oakland company to dance the pas de deux from the ballet during the 1992-93 season, and the complete work for 1993-94. There are no current plans to bring the ballet to the Southland on tour, according to a company spokesman.
Fitzell has been a principal dancer with ABT and the San Francisco Ballet. He also has taught dance at UC Irvine, where Loring, best known for his ballet “Billy the Kid,†founded the dance department in 1965 and taught until 1980.
