GOLF ROUNDUP : Crenshaw Ends Drought as Norman’s Continues

Ben Crenshaw broke one two-year streak and extended another one with his victory Sunday over Greg Norman in the Western Open at Lemont, Ill.

Crenshaw used a late, two-stroke swing to leapfrog over Norman and claim his first victory since 1990.

Norman’s two-year non-winning string was extended with a second consecutive frustrating runner-up finish in this event.

Crenshaw came to the final hole needing a par to stay in front of Norman. He got it with a five-foot putt.

Norman, playing behind him, then needed a birdie on the 18th to force a tie. He got his approach about 20 feet below the hole, but his birdie putt was inches short.

Crenshaw scored the 16th victory of his 20-season career with a 69 and a 276 total, 12 under par on the Dubsdread course at the Cog Hill golf complex.

Norman, who blew a five-shot lead when he played the final nine holes in 41 in this event a year ago, had a bogey-bogey-bogey start and matched par 72 to finish second alone at 277.

Gibby Gilbert birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat J.C. Snead and win the $600,000 Kroger Senior Classic at the Jack Nicklaus Sports Center in Kings Island, Ohio.

Gilbert (68) and Snead (67) completed a rain-plagued third round at 15-under-par 198.

Both players parred the first hole of the playoff. Gilbert then sank a six-foot birdie on the second hole after Snead barely missed a 12-foot birdie attempt.

Patty Sheehan won the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic by a stroke to take her second title in a week and become the only two-time winner this season on the LPGA Tour.

Sheehan shot a five-under-par 66 to finish with a four-under 209 over the 6,270-yard, par-71 Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio.

Brandie Burton, Heather Drew, Tammie Green and second-round leader Deb Richard tied for second.

Sheehan earned $60,000.
