Wallace’s Son Ahead in House Primary Voting
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — George Wallace Jr., heir to Alabama’s most famous political name, appeared to have won a Democratic runoff for Congress on Tuesday.
Wallace was running ahead in most counties in southeast Alabama’s 2nd District in his race against former Medicaid commissioner Faye Baggiano.
With 52% of the precincts reporting, Wallace had 65% of the vote. Baggiano, seeking to become the first woman elected to Congress from Alabama, had 35%.
Wallace, 40, in his second term as state treasurer, campaigned unabashedly as the son of former four-term Gov. George C. Wallace and the late Gov. Lurleen Wallace.
Baggiano, 49, played up the relationship’s negative side, dubbing Wallace “Junior†and telling voters he “never had a job his daddy didn’t get for him.†The elder Wallace, in poor health, was unable to campaign actively.
The race also was heated with Baggiano’s references to her opponent’s three divorces and allegations he plagiarized his platform, which he denied.
