Pebble Beach proved even tougher for amateurs Monday than it was for the pros in the recent U.S. Open as Carl Lundquist of Stockton shot a 71, one under par, for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the California State Amateur tournament.

Playing over the course still cut to the conditions over which the U.S. Open was played earlier this month, Lundquist shot the only sub-par score of the opening round, and one of only seven scores better than 77 at Pebble Beach.

Twenty-one golfers bettered 77 over Spyglass Hill, the other course in use.

U.S. Amateur champion Mitch Voges was disqualified for continuing to use a putter he bent in a display of emotion early in the round.
