Crenshaw : Ebony Theatre Fund-Raiser

Ebony Showcase Theatre & Cultural Arts Center Inc. is sponsoring a weekend fund-raiser in a last-minute attempt to save the 40-year-old center from bankruptcy.

The theater, located at 4720 W. Washington Blvd., is one of the oldest black-owned theaters in the country. It was founded by actor Nick Stewart, who played the part of Lightnin’ on “The Amos and Andy Show” and his wife, Edna.

The weekend fund-raiser will include four shows, beginning at 8 p.m. Friday with an evening of comedy. On Saturday, rap artists will perform from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and jazz musicians will be on stage from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.. Sunday will feature a Gospel show from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a multicultural performing arts show from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 with African dance and poetry readings.
