A 24-hour fact-finding visit to Cuba by nearly 80 U.S. businessmen has bolstered the Communist-ruled island’s campaign of defiance against a tightening U.S. economic embargo.

Senior Cuban officials were jubilant about Wednesday’s visit by the Americans, part of a group of more than 120 businessmen from 18 nations who attended a conference in Havana on business, trade and investment opportunities in Cuba.

“Anything that can be done against the (U.S.) blockade is a good thing,†Carlos Lage, a senior Cuban economic strategist and close aide of President Fidel Castro, told reporters.
