A Los Angeles jury Tuesday awarded $6 million to residents of a luxury downtown high-rise in what lawyers for the residents said may be the first such verdict in California favoring owners who claimed property damage in an asbestos abatement case.
By a 9-3 vote, a Superior Court jury found in favor of residents of Bunker Hill Towers, who contended that W. R. Grace & Co. was responsible for damage caused by one of its products, which contains asbestos, having been applied to the steel girders of the building as an insulating material.
The Bunker Hill Towers Condominium Assn. had asked for $12.5 million, the amount it said was needed to remove the asbestos entirely.
