Herb Brooks, former U.S. Olympic hockey coach, will replace Tom McVie as coach of the New Jersey Devils, who last season compiled their best record.
General Manager Lou Lamariello said that Brooks was promoted from the team’s American Hockey League franchise in Utica, N.Y., because he is better suited to the changing game of hockey.
Brooks, 54, is the Devils’ fifth coach in five years. He coached the United States to the gold medal at the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980.
