IRVINE : Edward Teller to Talk on Technology, Peace
Physicist Edward Teller, perhaps best known as the “father of the hydrogen bomb†and his advocacy of the “Star Wars†space defense program, will talk about technology and peace tonight at UC Irvine.
Teller will speak at 7 p.m. in the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall on campus. The lecture, sponsored by the university’s Global Peace and Conflict Studies student group, is free for students and $3 for the public.
Teller, director emeritus of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and now a senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, also will be on campus Wednesday for a simulated arms control negotiating session between the United States and the former Soviet Union.
The panel will convene at 2 p.m. in the Emerald Bay Room of the UCI Student Center. Other panelists will include Air Force Lt. Gen. Lloyd Leavitt, former deputy director of the U.S. Strategic Air Command; UCI political scientist Patrick Morgan, holder of the Tierney Chair for peace studies; Ian Masters, a film producer and radio commentator on global security, and Orange County businessman Thomas Tierney, who with his wife, Elizabeth, endowed the Tierney chair.
