VAN NUYS : Razing of Buildings to Be Discussed

The Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council will meet Tuesday to discuss a proposal to demolish abandoned Air National Guard buildings.
The council, an advisory body to the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners, will also discuss a decision by the Federal Aviation Administration not to increase salaries and staffing at the airport’s control tower.
The council will meet at the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys at 7 p.m.
The commissioners had intended to demolish the former guard facilities as part of a plan to develop the 62-acre site. But Mayor Tom Bradley asked the board in January to delay the razing so that the property can be used to temporarily house city helicopters that are crowded into another airport site.
Some advisory council members said they were upset last month when airport officials announced that plans were underway to demolish some of the buildings without a public hearing.
The advisory council will also discuss the FAA decision last month to reject a request from controllers to increase salaries and staffing at the tower. The Van Nuys chapter of the National Air Traffic Controllers Assn. sought higher salaries to attract more experienced personnel to handle the high traffic volume. But the FAA said the facility does not qualify for staff increases.
