State No. 1 in Latino-Owned Businesses: California continues to lead the nation in the number of Latino-owned businesses, according to an annual ranking by Hispanic Business magazine. California had 134 companies among the top 500 Latino businesses, which are ranked by annual sales. Florida was second, with 112 companies, and Texas was third, with 67 companies. Los Angeles alone placed 61 companies among the top 500, up from 54 last year. According to the magazine, the nation’s largest Latino-owned firm is Bacardi Imports, a Miami-based rum and wine importer and distributor with 1991 sales of $580 million. Cal-State Lumber Sales, a San Ysidro wood products firm, was the largest California company on the list. It ranked eighth, with 1991 sales of $147.3 million.
