Kennedy Galpin; USC Trustee

Kennedy B. Galpin, former chairman of the board of international insurance brokerage Marsh & McLennan and a USC trustee, has died. He was 69.

Galpin died Wednesday at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach after a short illness. He had homes in San Marino, Laguna Niguel and Indian Wells.

A USC trustee since 1973, Galpin was also founding president of USC Associates, a fund-raising group for the university. He was chairman of the board of councilors and founding president of the Widney Fellows support group, both in the USC School of Medicine.

He graduated in 1947 from the USC School of Business and won the school’s award for outstanding alumnus in 1970. He served for many years as a councilor of that school.

Galpin, a native of Indianapolis, began his career with the insurance firm Cosgrove & Co., which merged with Marsh & McLennan. He retired in 1988 after many years as head of the firm’s western division.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, son Christopher, daughter Cinda Hoeven, and three grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Kennedy Galpin Memorial Fund at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, 1420 San Pablo St., Room A-303, Los Angeles, Calif., 90033.
