OXNARD : Boy, 2, Struck by Delivery Truck Dies
A 2-year-old Oxnard boy died Sunday after being run over by a pizza delivery truck, police said.
Ramon Suarez was standing in a driveway in the 600 block of East Pleasant Valley Road at 1:05 p.m. when a truck driven by Domino’s Pizza employee Juan Gomez, 28, of Oxnard struck him, said Ernie Orosco, Oxnard Police Department traffic investigator.
Gomez had driven down the driveway to deliver pizzas to residents of an apartment complex when an ice cream truck approached him and he pulled over to the right shoulder to allow the truck to pass, Orosco said. When the ice cream truck passed, Gomez pulled back onto the driveway, Orosco said.
Residents screamed at him to stop because he had run over the boy, Orosco said. Gomez immediately stopped, got out of his vehicle and found the boy under the truck, he said.
Gomez pulled the child from under the truck and performed first aid before Ramon was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Orosco said.
The boy was treated in the emergency room, but died at 2:05 p.m., Deputy Coroner Dale Zentzis said.
Gomez told investigators that he did not see Ramon before the accident, Orosco said.
Oxnard police investigators were reviewing the incident, Sgt. Jamie Skeeters said.
Gomez was not taken into custody, Skeeters said, adding that a decision on whether to file charges against him is pending.
