Toyota Develops Lean-Burning Engine: Japan’s largest auto maker said it developed a new generation of engine that can boost fuel economy up to 8% and lower carbon dioxide emissions. It said it will start using the engines in passenger cars in Japan by the end of the year. The engines will be in vehicles with both manual and automatic transmissions. Last October, Honda Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motor Co. began installing lean-burning engines, but only in vehicles with manual transmission.
