Tougher Copyright Law Adopted: Parliament passed sweeping changes in Taiwan’s copyright law in a major effort to protect intellectual property rights. The government hopes passage of the long-delayed amendments will help avert U.S. trade retaliation as Taiwan officials prepare to present a plan to enforce copyright protection of U.S. works at a meeting in Washington this week. The new law extends the term of copyright protection from the current 30 years to the life of the author plus 50 years. Taiwan also extended protection to foreign copyrighted works published up to 20 years before 1985.
