Machine Tool Orders Fall: Orders of American-made machine tools dropped in April after two monthly gains, a reflection of weakening foreign demand, an industry report said. Economists said the Assn. for Manufacturing Technology’s latest figures may be ominous for this country because they substantiate evidence of a declining appetite for U.S. goods abroad. Orders totaled $219.95 million in April, down 9.4% from a revised March figure of $242.80 million, said the McLean, Va.-based trade group. The March figure was 15% higher than the February figure. On the positive side, total orders for April were well ahead of year-earlier levels of $193.70 million.
