In other Avocado League games:
El Camino 6, Oceanside 3--The Wildcats (10-12, 6-4) used an unusual combination of speed and power to topple their rivals, with home runs by Chris Christobale and Daniel Espozito and eight stolen bases. Martin Arispe, who has seven homers this year, stole home for the second time this season. The Pirates (12-11-2, 3-7) threatened with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, but Espozito, relieving for Tyson Allen (3-2), threw one pitch and got a double play.
San Marcos 8, Ramona 4--Denny McAdams came in in the sixth for San Marcos and struck out all six batters he faced. McAdams, two for four, two RBIs, was a hitting force for San Marcos (10-10, 7-3) as well. Teammate Chaise Bivin also was two for four with two RBIs. Ramona fell to 5-17, 1-9.
Rancho Bernardo 6, San Pasqual 1--Rancho Bernardo’s four-run seventh padded its 2-1 lead against San Pasqual. Brent Sausen’s two-run homer and James Jones solo home run were pivotal for Rancho Bernardo in the seventh.
Grossmont 3-A League
Helix 8, Granite Hills 2--The Highlanders fared better in this game between two teams that entered 3-3. Bobby Miller had a pair of doubles and Ryan Smith two hits and two RBIs to help pitcher Mario Sanchez improve to 5-3. Helix is 14-9, 4-3. Mike Smith and Kris Sutton had two hits each for Granite Hills (12-9, 3-4).
Grossmont 11, Monte Vista 7--Center fielder Wynter Phoenix picked up two hits, drove in four runs, scored once and stole two bases and shortstop Jon Henrichs was two for three with three RBIs for top-ranked Grossmont (17-1-1, 7-0). For Monte Vista (14-12-1, 3-5), brothers Jeremy (three for four, two home runs) and Ryan Litsey (four for four, one homer) combined for most of the Monarchs’ 12 hits.
Palomar League
Vista 7, Rancho Buena Vista 6--Going into the game tied for the league lead, No. 5 Vista didn’t so much hold off a six-run, sixth-inning rally by Rancho Buena Vista, than aid it. The Panthers committed three of their four errors in the sixth. Matt Stone, who had a one-run homer, went the distance for Vista, giving up three hits--two in the sixth--while he walked two and struck out 11. All of RBV’s runs were unearned. The Longhorns fell to 13-9-1, 7-3.
Poway 7, Torrey Pines 4--Not convinced that Poway’s 4-3 lead was enough, John Koustmer began the bottom of the sixth with a single and eventually scored on Jon Butler’s chopper, to get going the Titans three-run inning.
Fallbrook 3, Orange Glen 2--The Patriots made the mistake of letting Warrior pitcher Steve Pack stay in the game. Pack (6-2) went the distance in a nine-inning game for the victory. He also drove in the game winner with a single that scored Chris Baker in the bottom of the ninth. Pack also singled in Fallbrook’s first round in the first inning. The Warriors improved to 12-10, 5-5.
1-A Coastal League
La Jolla Country Day 6, Mt. Empire 4--The second-place Torres continued to put pressure on first-place Francis Parker by improving to 11-7, 7-2. LJCD scored two runs in each the second, third and fourth innings to support pitcher Jamie Blake (6-3). Aaron Rubenson was two for four with two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Citrus League
Midway Baptist 7, Lutheran 5--Junior catcher Lee Watterman picked up two hits, drove in a run and stole five bases for Midway Baptist.
SOFTBALL
Avocado League
Escondido 1, Carlsbad 0--Senior pitcher Marquessa Penrod (9-1) struck out eight as Escondido improved to 18-1, 8-1.
