Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Court Refuses to Halt Probe of Bank Papers

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to halt a special counsel’s review of records from the now-closed House bank. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, without comment, denied an emergency request by Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez (D-Tex.) to block special counsel Malcolm R. Wilkey, a retired federal judge, from examining the extensive records pending further court action. Rehnquist handles such emergency requests in cases originating in federal court in the District of Columbia. Gonzalez said the case is not moot even though House officials complied this week with a federal grand jury subpoena and turned over the records to Wilkey.
