Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Happy Land Lessor Makes Plea Bargain
- Share via
A leaseholder of the Bronx building that housed the Happy Land social club, where an arsonist killed 87 people, agreed to a plea bargain. Jay Weiss pleaded guilty to owning a building that did not have the proper permit or sprinkler system. Weiss, husband of actress Kathleen Turner, agreed to pay $60,000 to be used for a Bronx community service center that serves Hondurans and to perform 50 hours of community service. Many of the victims were Honduran immigrants. Co-defendant Alex DiLorenzo owned the property and had leased it to Weiss, who had sublet it to the club owner. The non-jury trial continued with DiLorenzo as sole defendant. The blaze was set March 25, 1990, by Julio Gonzalez, the jilted boyfriend of a club employee.
